Kirkby railway station, Merseyside
Opened in 1848 by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway on what became the line from Liverpool Exchange to Manchester Victoria via Wigan. The original station was on the far side of the bridge. In 1977, the platform seen here was constructed in association with electrification of the line from Liverpool, with passengers having to walk under the bridge to continue by diesel train towards Wigan. (See
SJ4099 : Kirkby railway station, Merseyside, 2007 for a 2007 view from the other side of the bridge).
View north east towards Headbolt Lane and Wigan, with a train departing for the then new station at Headbolt Lane. In 2023, Merseyrail electric trains were extended to this new station (running on battery power) and the foot connection under the bridge at Kirkby was removed. The 1848 platform beyond the bridge was also closed.
